John Alley prefaces this message with truths about posterity – the generations to come and the way in which our faithful prayers today can affect the outcome for those generations. John then goes on to discuss the continuous nature of law and grace. For the person without the Gospel, says John, the law has no power to strengthen, only to condemn. However, once grace has been received the law becomes a wonderful teacher, pointing the way to righteousness in Christ. The law reveals to us our sinful nature and also the moral integrity and purity of God. When we receive gospel grace, however, we are free from the law, which no longer condemns us but instructs us in a life of obedience to the grace we have received. John illustrates his message with many strong Scripture references, encouraging the listener to consider the continuity of law and grace as a harmonious combination for those who choose to live under grace.
