A New Season for Faith and Prayer

In this message John explains how, whilst the Lord has strong heart desires and powerful plans for the things He passionately desires to do everywhere, (including things He desires to do for us, our region and our nation) the only things that do come about are those that we also have a heart desire and passion for. And that heart desire and passion for Him to work must be expressed through prayer. John encourages that there is a great need for us all to stir our hearts to express, with real passion in consistent prayer, our desire for the Lord to do those great things that we envision for life all around us. There are great outcomes to be obtained.

Perseverance

Perseverance is an old fashioned word, and yet still appears in the most recent translations of the Bible. It's not fashionable to tell people they need to "make an effort" as part of being a Christian, and yet in this message John Alley showed how every command has a promise, and how very frequently, promises also come with proviso, or attached condition. So making an effort, is actually still a part of being a faithful follower of the Lord. He wants us to persevere, to seek after Him and to find Him. Everything we receive if by grace, yet in hand with this, the scriptures call for the "perseverance of the saints."

Question Sunday

How do you know God is speaking to you? Why does Jesus say speak to the mountain in Matthew, but speak to the mulberry tree in Luke? Why does Jesus say that the love of most will grow cold? How can the gospel be victorious when the path to life is narrow, and only a few find it? These questions were covered at our first Q&A session at Peace Christian Church.

During our New Years Even prayer meeting in 2017 we had discussed between us some of the difficulties and hardships of 2017. The Lord was with us, but it had been hard work. Many of us felt that the year behind contained many lessons and much learning for us, and that along with that season, that a new period lay ahead. Not just in that prayer meeting, but ever since, there is real sense of hope and optimism for 2018. The word that best describes what we believe and feel is 'opportunity.'

Embracing The Ordinary

Jonathan Maxwell begins his inspiring message with the story of Arthur Stace, an uneducated man who was unable to write his own name, and yet after experiencing the call of God went on to write the word “Eternity” in perfect copperplate writing on the footpaths of Sydney, over and over for many years. The ordinary actions of an ordinary person impacted on the hearts and minds of many people, to the point that an enormous copy of Mr Stace’s “Eternity” graced the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the eve of the new millennium. Jonathan goes on to recount the story of the way in which the ordinary actions of a member of the congregation had eternal effect on the lives of others as well and stories from the Bible in which God marvelously used ordinary people to extraordinary effect. God uses the ordinary, the normal and the everyday, says Jonathan – and He wants to use YOU! None of us feel special in the ordinariness of everyday life, but Jonathan’s encouragement to continue to walk in obedience and faith with God, persevering in the ordinary actions of every day will inspire and uplift many.

Your Body is the Lords

John Alley’s message begins with two passages including one from Leviticus 19:26-37 which outlines part of the Old Testament Law. At that time, the world was full of pagans and demon worshippers. This passage is meant to warn the people of God not to do the things that pagans do. The Law, says John, is good and was an unspeakable blessing to Israel. The New Testament, then, builds on the Law and gives grace by which we are able to follow the ways of God. Our mission is to learn how to please God, and then to walk in it. This passage also specifically says that the people of God are not to mark their bodies with tattoos. And yet, in today’s Western culture it is becoming commonplace for people to have extensive tattoos – including some Christian believers. Tattoos, explains John, originated in pagan worship and tribal cultures. When the Gospel became strong, this practice became considerably less. However with the current trend in the West is a diminishing of the power of the Gospel, some practices previously cleaned out of Christian culture have resurfaced. This should not be. We have a better life, says John, and the way to show that is by living different lives and not by copying the world and its trends. No matter what the tattoo depicts, it is not a good witness to Christ. The excerpt played in this message is found here. What's Behind Tattoos is an except from the message Being Peculiar

Mary & Zechariah

Philip Alley once again focuses on an aspect of the very familiar Christmas story, drawing comparisons between the respective responses given by Zechariah and by Mary, when each was visited by the angel Gabriel. Zechariah was skeptical, asking for evidence that the promised child would be born to himself and Elizabeth, while Mary was humble and simply asked for understanding – “how can this be?” Philip asks the question, “Why did Gabriel strike Zechariah dumb but call Mary “full of grace”? It was because of the differing heart attitudes. Philip goes on to say that any of us could easily become like Zechariah, worn down by the chain of disappointment to a state of resignation and thus developing a cynical and questioning attitude. Philip concludes his message with 3 lessons to be learned: • Proudly demanding evidence displays a failure to trust God • We should instead humbly seek an explanation. • Don’t despair when we fall. Instead, in humility repent and press on in faith.

Embracing Faith

Philip Alley begins his message by likening the events of our lives to the action of ocean waves which crash over us, churning and tossing us this way and that. And yet, it is possible to stand fast by exercising our faith. Philip speaks from James 2:14, which speaks of the interaction of faith and actions. Can faith without actions save? What kinds of actions are we talking about? Philip answers these questions and more as he takes examples from the lives of Bible identities such as Noah, Abraham and Sarah, each of whom held fast to their faith in the face of overwhelming opposition or circumstance. Dennis Wells then tells a story of acting in faith and seeing remarkable results after God revealed information in a dream which ran counter to the “wisdom” of the world. Philip then resumes with the statement that when doubt comes, it is time to go back to the Bible and believe. “The glory of God is a person fully alive” This quote from St Irenaeus sums up the intent of this message. Faith never glorifies man, says Philip, it is God who acts and therefore it is God who is glorified.
