Philip Alley begins this message by reiterating some of the values already discussed and then raising the value of openness. Philip uses hospitality as an example to being open to others, quoting many Scriptures which refer to the use of hospitality. The early church, says Philip, had at their disposal the clearest of messages – the cross – and the simplest of tools – the home. In church there is one speaker and all others listen, but in a home situation all are free to contribute. Jesus links His royalty and kingship to hospitality – “Whatever you did to the least of these, you did to me” Hospitality brings healing – “You matter to God and to me”. Philip goes on to quote John Stonestreet, who said “Escape is not an option for Christians”. The Apostle John’s writings all point to light overcoming darkness, and Philip draws this rich truth out from several verses of Scripture before telling the story of Hans and Sophie Scholl who saw great evil being done and acted, even at the cost of their own lives. This message is both challenging and inspiring, and provokes the listener to seriously consider the claims of Christ on our lives.
